Prohibition legislation?
It is because alcohol is seen as evil or causing of evil in homes, personal life, workplaces. People, particulary women and church members during that time believed that alcohol caused domestic abuse, and pain. The temperance movement to ban alcohol didn't work as sucessfully, so they asked to have an amendment to ban alcohol completely. The prohibition movement's strength grew, especially after the formation of the Anti-Saloon League in 1893. The League, and other organizations that supported prohibition such as the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, soon began to succeed in enacting local prohibition laws. Eventually the prohibition campaign was a national effort.
